Candidate Registration — Important Information for Candidates for Future Municipal Elections

The Local Authorities Election Act Section 147.21 requires eligible individuals who intend to run for all future municipal elections to register with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo before accepting any campaign contributions, including the funds of the candidate. These individuals must file an “Application for Registration of Notice of Intent to Become a Candidate for Municipal Office” with the Municipality setting out:

  • the full name and address of the candidate;
  • the address where the records of the candidate are maintained and where any communications may be addressed;
  • names and addresses of financial institutions where campaign contributions will be deposited; and
  • names of signing authorities of all of the financial institutions listed.

Where there is any change in information required to be provided in the application, the registered candidate shall notify the Municipality in writing within 48 hours after the change. Notification must also be given if you change your intent to be nominated for an upcoming election.

Any candidate who does not adhere to the legislation is guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine of not more than $1,000. In addition, anyone who is guilty of an offence under the Local Authorities Election Act is ineligible to run as a candidate for any election under this Act for 10 years.

The candidate registration legislation, which came into effect January 1, 2014, does not apply if the candidate’s entire election campaign is funded exclusively out of the candidate’s own funds, up to a maximum of $10,000.

The Municipality is required to maintain a registry of candidates who have filed their intent to be a candidate in the municipal election. The names of individuals who have filed the candidate registration and the date received will be made public prior to the next election. All other information contained in the form and the registry is of a personal nature and will not be disclosed.

Please complete the Application for Registration of Notice of Intent to Become a Candidate for Municipal Office and file with Legislative Services (7th Floor, 9909 Franklin Avenue, Fort McMurray) before accepting any campaign contributions.
