Phil Meagher - Ward 1
“The more you give to your community, the better place it will be for you, and for those who come after you.” Phil Meagher (pronounced “Mar”) has lived by these words for many years now. He began his political career at a young age when he got involved with School Council and sports committees in Nackawic, New Brunswick. He went on to get his Bachelor of Education at the University of New Brunswick and moved to Fort McMurray after graduation.
During a stellar career in education, he worked his way up from Vice Principal to Principal and now holds the position of Chief Deputy Superintendent of Fort McMurray Public Schools. During those years he not only garnered a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Victoria, but he helped create the local High School Challenge Cup, a year-long series of athletic events between the city’s three (now four) senior high schools.
From the time Phil made Fort McMurray his home over three decades ago, he has been deeply involved in the community. He volunteers on numerous boards, committees and fundraisers including the United Way Board, the Oil Sands Discovery Centre Board, the Communities in Bloom Committee and the fundraiser Ski for Hope held for the Centre of Hope.
Phil, who is now in his seventh term on Council, is working hard to make sure we host the best Western Canada Games ever in 2015, and that we create a new downtown that everyone can be proud of. He is also passionate about seeing the start and completion of a Long-Term Care Facility in Fort McMurray. He promised, at the start of his most recent term, “I will not get a haircut until the shovels are in the ground!” His motto continues to be “Every Citizen, Every Day, and No Exceptions.”
Phil and his wife Sherri are parents to Kimba, Willow, Belle, Abram and Zakkai. There is no such thing as down time for Phil and, when not in Council Chambers, he is out cross-country skiing, canoeing, camping, hiking, motor biking, golfing and even drawing. An athlete since high school, Phil is an avid runner who has won 46 marathons, a Silver medal in the 1991 Canadian National Marathon Championships and holds the title of “Alberta’s Top Long Distance Runner.” In 2009 he was inducted into the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame as an athlete.
When Phil hung up his running shoes because of a hip replacement, he fell in love with cross-country skiing and, in no time at all, ranked third in the Alberta Cup Masters Series in the 2012-2013 ski season. “Fort McMurray has been a natural fit for me. I love the great outdoors, the river and the trails, and I am always up for an adventure. Maybe sometimes too much of an adventure!”
In the spirit of giving, Phil has also been a grade two Sunday school teacher for over 30 years, a hockey official at the Junior A level and a coach for many sports. Phil received the Keyano College Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award in 2011 and the Government of Canada presented him with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
