Chain of Office History
The Mayor's Chain-of-Office is a visual reminder of the history of the eleven communities and rural area that forms one of the largest regional municipalities, geographically, in North America.
The Chain-of-Office reflects the unique character of the region. Each link represents an element of the character and symbolizes people joined in a common cause. The background of black leather represents the major resource and employer within the region, the oil sands industry.
The links recognize the establishment of all the communities within the region, Fort Chipewyan, being the oldest settlement in Alberta, established in 1788, to the youngest community in the region, Saprae Creek Estates, established in 1988. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo includes Anzac, Conklin, Draper, Fort Chipewyan, Fort Fitzgerald, Fort MacKay, Fort McMurray, Gregoire Lake Estates, Janvier, Mariana Lake, and Saprae Creek Estates.
The Chain-of-Office also recognizes the amalgamation of the Rural Improvement District No. 143 and the City of Fort McMurray on April 1, 1995, to form the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, with the corporate symbol of the buffalo in the center of the chain.
The corporate symbol is made up of a roundel and linear bars representing a compass, pointing north, south, east and west. This geographic reference had been chosen to symbolize the sheer size and scale of the Municipality. The style of the compass reflects the character of the First Nations art in order to identify the region's original inhabitants. By its very power and presence, the bison (buffalo) presents an ideal symbol for a vibrant, strong community. It represents vigor and fortitude. By its gregarious nature, it also symbolizes community. By its history, it represents ideas of perseverance, endurance, and renewal. It stands for the individual's independence as well as for the collected group, living together in mutual support and harmony. The semicircular form above the roundel represents the Aurora Borealis. This awe-inspiring phenomenon is a natural feature unique to northern regions. It has been chosen here to symbolize the unparalleled experience of life in the North. This abstract form is intended to appear umbrella-like, in this reference, to convey the sense that the aurora is a canopy enveloping the region and connecting together the people who live in this northern municipality.
The collaboration of resources demonstrates our region's commitment to working together toward a better future for everyone.
