Wood Buffalo Culture Plan

Supported by a Community Advisory Committee, the Municipality is working to develop the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan. The Culture Plan is being developed in partnership with key community stakeholders and will serve as a guiding document to support and enhance arts and heritage initiatives in Wood Buffalo over the next ten years.

The RMWB 2018 - 2021 Strategic Plan identifies the support of arts and culture as Strategy Priority #3f. The development and implementation of an arts and culture plan through collaborative partnerships is a key component of this initiative.

The Wood Buffalo Culture Plan will outline arts and heritage priorities of each community partner and key stakeholder, including the Municipality, to align policies, strategies, and actions to support decision-making and resource allocation to maintain a vibrant, sustainable community and quality of life for current and future residents.

To date, the Community Advisory Committee includes representatives from:

  • Arts Council Wood Buffalo
  • Fort McMurray Heritage Society
  • Fort McMurray Tourism
  • Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre
  • McMurray Metis (MNA Local 1935)
  • Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo
  • Oil Sands Community Alliance
  • Regional Recreation Corporation
  • Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
  • Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts.

Development of the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan has been informed by dozens of one-on-one interviews, five focus group sessions, an extensive literature review, an environmental scan of the Wood Buffalo region as well as comparable districts with an urban service area and surrounding rural communities, and public engagement at Alberta Culture Days events. Five Priority areas, each with its own strategies, have been developed to focus the efforts of all partners and stakeholders toward achieving the Vision for culture in the region.

What is culture?

UNESCO defines culture as “that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.”

The Canadian government considers culture to be “creative artistic activity and the goods and services produced by it, and the preservation of heritage”.

The Value of Culture:

  • Personal health and well-being, social issues, inter-generational contact, support balanced human development, foster innovation and creativity.
  • Makes our community a better place to live, improve quality of life, and can help reduce vandalism.
  • Heritage is a necessary component of the cultural landscape, about deciding what is important to pass on, building blocks for regional development, cultural tourism activity, social infrastructure, and the creation of green jobs
  • Economic impact: both direct benefits – jobs, earned revenues – and indirect benefits – attracting visitors, retaining residents
