Video: Winter Preparedness

Winter storms are events that can affect all communities within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Environment Canada tracks weather systems to mitigate their potential effects, but winter storms can strike with little notice and can potentially threaten life and property.

When a winter storm happens, visit Environment Canada’s website and listen to local media for severe weather warnings and advice. As power outages can happen during winter storms, remember to keep a battery or crank-powered radio on-hand.

We also encourage people to sign up to receive Alberta Emergency Alerts, which are issued to provide the public with critical information about an immediate disaster, where it is occurring and what action you need to take. Visit Alberta Emergency Alert for more information.

You can greatly lessen the impact of a winter storm by taking time to prepare in advance by following the 3 Steps to Emergency Preparedness:

  • Know the risks
  • Make a plan
  • Get a kit
