Barbecues on Balconies

The National Fire Code Alberta Edition requires that the storage and handling of propane shall conform to CSA B149.2 Propane Storage and Handling Code.

Barbecue Requirements

  • A barbecue that is equipped with a propane tank must be installed 3 feet (0.9 meters) away from any building opening.
  • Propane tanks, whether full or empty shall not be stored or used inside of a building.

Moving Cylinders

A propane cylinder may be moved through a building by an elevator provided the only person(s) involved with the cylinder are in the elevator. Valves outlet must be closed and plugged, and protective caps or collars must be in place.

Restriction

Solid-fuel fire barbecues are not permitted in a building or balcony of a building containing more than 2 dwelling units.
