Restaurant Exhaust Systems

The National Fire Code Alberta Edition requires that commercial cooking equipment exhaust systems are in conformance with NFPA 96, “Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations.”
Qualifications
Only qualified persons shall perform maintenance on commercial cooking equipment exhaust systems when they have obtained a certificate verifying that they have completed a course from one of the following institutes:

  • Phil Ackland Kitchen Exhaust Certification and Training
  • MFS Exhaust Hood Cleaning School

Working in the RMWB

A valid permit is required before any work is done on a restaurant exhaust system. Businesses must complete the Restaurant Exhaust Permit package and submit it to the Fire Prevention Branch for review and processing.

STANDATA

Alberta Municipal Affairs has issued the province-wide STANDATA 14-FCI-005 “Fixed Fire Suppression and Exhaust Systems – Cooking and Cleaning”  to interpret andclarify Fire and Building Code requirements.

Records

Records of audits, plans, tests, inspections, maintenance and operational procedures shall be made, and a copy shall be retained at the premises for two years.
