Patio Grant

The Patio Grant encourages property owners and tenants to develop a new patio or enhance an existing patio.

Patios are an outdoor extension of an existing food establishment, such as a restaurant or cafe. They may help to attract customers and enhance the vitality of the street and public realm.

Patios may be constructed entirely on private land, or on sidewalks or street-adjacent to the business. Some studies suggest that outdoor dining areas and patios may boost revenues by 30 per cent.

Sidewalk and on-street patios will be considered on a case-by-case basis where they meet municipal requirements and mitigate safety concerns.

Why patio grants?

Patio grants can be used to:

  • Encourage businesses to take advantage of under-used privately-owned or public spaces.
  • Create attractive, lively and pedestrian-friendly downtown streets.
  • Provide an opportunity for businesses to attract more patrons.

Grant value

Grants are provided as a 50 per cent reimbursement grant to a maximum of $10,000 per building for new patios or improvements to existing patios.
