Fort Chipewyan Winter Road Update – December 2

(Fort McMurray, AB – December 2, 2017) – Crews continue to make progress on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road with an anticipated opening date of mid-December pending weather conditions.

Flood crews have ice bridge construction well underway on the four major ice bridge river crossings in the delta section, though more repairs are still needed in the sand hills section in areas that were washed out earlier this year.

Delta Section
To date, crews have been clearing snow and constructing the road south from Fort Chipewyan to the south side of the Embarrass River.

Sand Hills Section
Significant progress has been made on the sand hills section from km 115 to 160 south of Fort Chipewyan.

On Nov. 27, repairs were completed on the washout at the Grayling Creek crossing – which delayed crews from proceeding north by approximately two weeks. Crews have now advanced north to the Richardson River and will continue making repairs to other washout areas.

The winter road is anticipated to be open for mid-December to a load limit of 5,000 kg or greater pending weather conditions.
