Age-friendly Needs Assessment highlights conditions for seniors in region

(Fort McMurray, AB – September 15, 2017) – The Advisory Committee on Aging (ACoA) has released a report it commissioned to assess the conditions for seniors in the region. This report will be presented to Council later this fall.

The Age-Friendly Needs Assessment asked residents and organizations in both urban and rural areas to rate their satisfaction with the World Health Organization’s eight domains of community life in the region. Based on these ratings, the report was able to highlight the areas of greatest need for seniors in our community.

In general, rural residents reported experiencing a greater number of age-friendly gaps and needs. Housing, community support and health services, and social participation were identified as significant issues.

In the urban service area, housing also rated high as an issue, along with civic participation and employment, and communication. For both areas of the region, the domain of outdoor spaces and buildings was rated with the most positive response.
“This report signifies the beginning of another important phase of our work,” said Linda Mywaart, Committee Chair. “Eventually, this report will allow us to identify and implement strategies to improve the lives of seniors in our region.”
