Bylaw Services Weekly Update: Nov. 7-13, 2016: Pedestrian Safety Month

(Fort McMurray, AB – November 4, 2016) – November is Pedestrian Safety Month in Alberta. We’re asking drivers and pedestrians to be vigilant and follow some simple safety tips:

For pedestrians:

  • Point, pause, proceed. Maintain eye contact with drivers to ensure that they have stopped before you proceed. 
  • Only cross at designated crossing points. Jaywalking is a $120 fine under the Roads and Transportation Bylaw. 
  • Do not cross the road while distracted. Remove headphones and put away your cell phone until you are safely across the road.
  • Ensure that you are visible to drivers. When in low light, wear reflective or bright coloured clothing.  

For drivers:

  • When approaching intersections or crosswalks, be alert for pedestrians.  
  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is a $776 fine under the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulations.  

Photo radar vehicles will be located near the following areas for week of Nov. 7-13, 2016:

  • Loutit Road
  • MacAlpine Crescent
  • Prairie Loop Boulevard
  • Highway 63 between Morrison Street and King Street
  • Confederation Way between Brett Drive and Highway 63
  • School Zones within the Urban Service Area

  • Thickwood Boulevard and Silin Forest Road
  • Thickwood Boulevard and Woodland Drive
  • Thickwood Boulevard and Cornwall Drive 
  • Thickwood Boulevard and Real Martin Drive
  • Franklin Avenue and Tamarack Village Mall
  • Franklin Avenue and Hospital Street
  • Confederation Way and Paquette Drive

We ask motorists to be mindful of posted speed limits and to obey traffic signals.
