*REVISED* Council Approves 2016 Property Assessments Motion

(Fort McMurray, AB – April 26, 2017) – Residents who believe their properties were not assessed at fair market value have an opportunity to request the municipality update their assessment. At the April 25 meeting, Council unanimously supported Coun. McGrath’s motion related to 2016 Property Assessments of properties severely damaged or destroyed by the May 2016 wildfire.

“I heard from several residents who disagreed with their 2016 property assessments, and I’d like to thank my fellow councillors for supporting this motion,” said Coun. Keith McGrath. “The intent to help our residents who need it most remains a top priority and I hope this will provide some relief to those residents.”

Residents are reminded that the deadline to file an appeal against the 2017 Notice of Assessment is May 1, 2017. It’s important to note that your property assessment is based on your property’s market condition as of July 1, 2016 and physical condition date as of December 31, 2016, which are legislated dates by the Municipal Government Act.

For residents who have been affected by the 2016 wildfire and believe their 2017 Notice of Assessment is incorrect due to the property’s physical condition as of December 31, 2016, please contact the Assessment office to have your assessment reviewed. If a discrepancy is found in the physical condition of your property due to the wildfire as of this legislated date, an appeal will not be required and a new assessment notice will be issued.
