Council meets with Infrastructure Minister, affirms Willow Square as critical priority

(Fort McMurray, AB – November 17, 2017) – On November 16, Mayor Scott and Councillors Balsom, Lalonde, Peddle and Stroud met with Infrastructure Minister Jansen at the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) annual convention in Edmonton. Jansen re-affirmed that the previously announced Willow Square Continuing Care Centre was moving forward as planned, including:

Design-to-build RFP deadline of December 15
Tender to be awarded by the end of January 2018
Construction to begin in the spring of 2018

“I am very pleased to say that our meeting with Minister Jansen went extremely well,” said Mayor Don Scott. “This Council is actively working on issues that are important to our residents and this care facility is a top priority, especially for our seniors.”

Since 2015, the Advisory Committee on Aging (ACoA) has been making strategic recommendations to Council regarding service delivery to seniors. And on Tuesday, November 14, ACoA recommended to Council that the RMWB engage in conversation and planning with Alberta Seniors and Housing for the Aging in Place segment of Willow Square.

During the AAMDC convention, the Mayor and Councillors had the opportunity to raise the issue of the Aging in Place facility at Willow Square with both the Seniors and Housing Minister Sigurdson and Minister of Health, Deputy Premier Hoffman.

“I look forward to working closely with Minister Hoffman, Minister Jansen, Minister Sigurdson and our seniors as we progress through each stage of this project,” said Mayor Scott. “Willow Square is a critical priority for this Council.”
