FireSmart fuel reduction set to begin in Anzac

(Fort McMurray, AB – October 19, 2017) — Crews will begin thinning and pruning evergreen trees and removing dead, standing trees in forested areas throughout Anzac starting the week of October 23, 2017. This FireSmart project will help mitigate the risk of wildfire to Anzac and is expected to be complete by March 2018. It is not a clear cutting operation.

The majority of debris will be disposed of using supervised burns, which is a standard procedure for FireSmart projects. The contractor, Infinite Forestry Consulting Ltd., will create manageable piles of wood and ignite the piles when it’s safe to do so. Timber will be made available for firewood where possible.

Every effort will be made to minimize smoke during the burning process. Signage near work areas will alert residents to the potential of smoke.

Throughout FireSmart fuel reduction projects, the safety and well-being of residents is the Municipality’s top priority. Fire and smoke from the supervised burns will be visible, which may result in unexpected emotional reactions. The Municipality reminds residents that this is natural and that resources for coping with stress are available at

“Disasters such as the wildfire can impact your emotional and physical health long after the event,” says Leesa McLeod, People Services, Recovery Task Force. “We encourage you to talk to a trusted friend, counsellor or support person should you experience an emotional reaction to FireSmart work. Please know that you are not alone and that there are supports available to you.”

Please use trails with caution, observe signs, and avoid active work zones and equipment. The project is anticipated to run consistently until the end of March.
