Firebreak rehabilitation and trail restoration under way in Timberlea and Eagle Ridge

(Fort McMurray, AB – August 15, 2017) – Crews are completing site assessments of firebreak areas and grading is scheduled to begin the week of September 5, 2017.

Work to be completed in 2017

Firebreak rehabilitation and trail restoration is expected to be completed in 2017 in firebreak areas near Walnut and Fireweed Crescents and on the north side of the Birchwood Trails in Eagle Ridge and in Timberlea.

Work to be completed in 2018

Firebreak rehabilitation and trail restoration will be completed in firebreak areas in Abasand, Anzac, Dickinsfield, Parsons Creek, Stone Creek and Thickwood in 2018.

Project details

The first 30 metres from the back of property lines in firebreak areas will be graded and topsoil and grass seed will be added. Approximately 30 per cent of firebreak areas beyond the first 30 metres will receive the same treatment and remaining firebreak areas will regenerate naturally.

All municipal trails that were damaged or destroyed during the wildfire will be restored and relocated into treed areas where possible.

FireSmart guidelines, which identify tree species and spacing, will be adhered to if trees are added to rehabilitated areas. Grass in the firebreak areas will be maintained as part of the Municipality’s mowing and maintenance program.

While work is underway and heavy machinery is working in the area, residents are advised that recreational use and rear yard access will be prohibited.
