Fort Chipewyan Aquatic Centre Officially Opens to the Community

(Fort McMurray, AB – February 1, 2017) – The Municipality has announced the grand opening of the Fort Chipewyan Aquatic Centre.

“I am delighted that Fort Chipewyan’s newest asset is officially opened to the community,” said Mayor Mellissa Blake. “I know this will be a well-used facility, and a fantastic gathering place for families, children, youth and elders.”

Located next to the Archie Simpson Arena, the new facility includes a 25-metre pool, waterpark, waterslide, hot tub and sauna.

“The new Aquatic Centre offers important opportunities for youth in Fort Chipewyan,” said Councillor Julia Cardinal. “With the potential to develop swimming skill sets as well as train as certified life guards, this opens the door for future employment opportunities both within the community and beyond.”

The official grand opening was on Jan. 31, though the facility opened for operations on Nov. 23, 2016, and has been very popular among residents.

“I’m very proud of our new facility,” said Councillor Claris Voyageur. “Though we officially opened yesterday, I’ve already seen many people enjoying the Aquatic Centre and it is certainly bringing many people together in our community.”

An official name has not yet been chosen for the facility, however, this will be considered by the Community Identification Committee following engagement with community leadership and Ward 2 Councillors.

The Fort Chipewyan Aquatic Centre aligns with the Municipality’s Strategic Plan, specifically Goal #7 for Building for a Healthy and Active Lifestyle by connecting people and communities through accessible, regional-based leisure and wellness activities, programs and public gathering places.
