Fort Chipewyan Winter Road Load Limit Reduced Until Evening of Feb. 19

(Fort McMurray, AB – February 16, 2017) – Due to warmer temperatures, the load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road has been reduced to 5,000 kg until Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 p.m.

A load limit of 5,000 kg is in place on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road throughout daytime and nighttime hours to preserve the integrity of the Winter Road and maintain safe driving conditions for motorists.

At 10 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, the load limit of 45,000 kg will be reinstated as temperatures are expected to drop and road conditions are expected to stabilize.

Empty trucks currently in Fort Chipewyan are able to return to the Fort McMurray area via the Winter Road on Feb. 16 after 10 p.m.

All municipal winter roads and trails are being monitored and updates will be provided as available based on weather conditions.

Motorists are reminded of routine maintenance along the Winter Road. Repairs will be underway at four sites with partial lane closures during selected times to accommodate the work. Traffic flow will not be interrupted by the work.

Please obey all posted signage and use caution when passing equipment on the road – maximum 30 km/h is advised. Motorists are also encouraged to test their brakes after travelling through freshly flooded crossings.

High clearance 4x4 vehicles are recommended. The delta area has rough sections so reduce speed and drive to conditions.

There are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage, so always be prepared for emergencies.

Updates will be provided regularly as required. Check the following sources for the latest information:
