Fort Chipewyan Winter Road Maintenance to Begin Next Week

(Fort McMurray, AB – February 10, 2017) – Routine maintenance will begin next week along the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road.

Workers will begin mobilizing this weekend, with maintenance activities to begin next week. Work is expected to finish in mid-March.

Repairs will be underway at four sites on the Winter Road with partial lane closures during selected times to accommodate the work. Traffic flow will not be interrupted by the work and the load limit remains at 45,000 kg.

Work will be taking place at the following locations:

  • Richardson River Bridge - 104 kilometres south of Fort Chipewyan
  • Transport Creek Culvert -  98 kilometres south of Fort Chipewyan
  • Chacamp Bridge - 28 kilometres south of Fort Chipewyan
  • Mission Creek Culvert - 2 kilometres west of Fort Chipewyan

Motorists are also reminded that tree clearing is happening along the road from kilometre 0 to kilometre 31, and from kilometre 84 to kilometre 145 until mid-February 2017.

Please obey all posted signage and use caution when passing graders and water trucks on the road – maximum 30 km/h is advised. Motorists are also encouraged to test their brakes after travelling through freshly flooded crossings.

High clearance 4x4 vehicles are recommended. The delta area has rough sections so reduce speed and drive to conditions.
