Important changes to Winter Maintenance Zones 2017/18 season

(Fort McMurray, AB – September 21, 2017) – Residents are reminded that Winter Maintenance Zones (WMZ) will activate in mid-October, including on-street parking restrictions.

Some changes have been made to this year’s program to make winter maintenance activities more efficient:

  1. The Monday and Tuesday zones have been grouped geographically for efficiency. Municipal staff will be placing stickers on affected “No Parking” signs indicating if their WMZ has changed.
  2. Each WMZ has been divided into four subzones each. If a subzone is not expected to be serviced on its active day, the subzone will be relaxed and you will be able to park in that subzone.
  3. While residents should always plan for their zone to be active on the day indicated on your neighbourhood signs, we’ll be relaxing zones when not enough snow has accumulated on the ground.

“We are always seeking ways to improve on our service delivery to residents, and the changes made to this year’s program will help us to better communicate,” said Kelly Colbourne, Manager, Public Works & Transit Services. “I encourage all residents to view our updated maps and information so they will know their zones and subzones.”

Once WMZs are active, on-street parking will not be available for one day a week in each of the five zones from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to facilitate snow plowing and other routine maintenance.

As WMZ season ramps up, crews will begin to bring out equipment for training, testing, checking plowing routes and assessing safety hazards. Motorists are advised to follow road equipment from a safe stopping distance and to allow space for visibility.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Municipal booth at the Fall Trade Show and Market this weekend at MacDonald Island to learn more about the program and ask questions.
