It’s Winter Storm Season: Get Prepared and be Safe

(Fort McMurray, AB – January 11, 2017) – Winter storms can strike our region quickly and unexpectedly. Residents can take steps to ensure they’re prepared for winter storms with safety in mind.

“Every winter, Wood Buffalo is at risk of being struck by a severe winter storm. Being prepared for winter storms is the best way to keep you and your family safe,” said Chris Graham, Assistant Deputy Chief, Emergency Management. “Make a plan for your household, put together an emergency kit, and know where to find up-to-date information during an emergency.”

To greatly lessen the impact of a winter storm, residents can prepare in advance by following the 3 Steps to Emergency Preparedness:

  • Know the risks.
  • Make a plan.
  • Get a kit.

When a winter storm happens, check our website and follow the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo on Facebook and Twitter for the most up-to-date information. Visit Environment Canada’s website and listen to local media for severe weather warnings and advice.

We also encourage residents to sign up for Alberta Emergency Alerts, which are issued to provide the public with critical information about an immediate disaster, where it is occurring and what action you need to take. Visit emergencyalert.alberta.ca for more information.

As power outages can happen during winter storms, remember to keep a battery or crank-powered radio on-hand.
