Municipality holds successful Social Procurement Design Labs

(Fort McMurray, AB – November 23, 2016) – As part of the Social Procurement pilot project, the Municipality engaged more than 100 stakeholders at Design Labs from Nov. 8-10.

Members of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce, the Fort McMurray Construction Association, NAABA and the social profit sector provided feedback and suggestions on creating a ‘Made in Wood Buffalo’ approach to improving the community and stimulating inclusive economic growth across the region through Social Procurement.

“It’s important to us that our stakeholders contribute to and benefit from our Social Procurement program,” said Laurie Gaudet, Procurement Supervisor. “I’d like to thank everyone who attended a Design Lab and provided feedback on this initiative. The results will be analyzed and taken into account as we continue developing our Social Procurement processes.”

Further details about the results of the Design Labs will be released in December.

Background:

In September, Council approved the Social Procurement pilot project, taking steps to be the first Municipality in Alberta to move forward with a Social Procurement Framework.

Social Procurement is a growing practice that seeks to better leverage tax dollars to achieve positive social outcomes in keeping with community values and strategic objectives. This is done by changing the way contracts are awarded and rewarding vendors who are willing to adapt their practices for the benefit of the community.

The Municipality’s first Social Procurement pilot project contract is for urban snow clearing, and will create work opportunities for house, formerly homeless people.
