RMWB Seeking Snow Angels for 2016-17 Winter Season

(Fort McMurray, AB – October 20, 2016) – The municipality is looking for dedicated, outgoing, and caring community members to volunteer to shovel local seniors’ driveways and sidewalks through the Snow Angel Program.

“So far this year we’ve had 56 homes sign up for the program and we’re expecting that number to grow,” said Caitlyn Evans, Program Coordinator. “Snow removal is a stress identified by most seniors as a seasonal challenge, and this in addition to the impact of the fire increases the need for volunteers to support them by providing this service.”

The service is available for seniors aged 65 and older, and has a goal to serve all seniors who apply. Priority is given to seniors with less social support and resources. Shovels and ice scrapers are donated by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and are delivered by RMWB staff.

The program began in 2009 as a partnership between Fort McMurray Public Schools and the municipality. Students from Dr. K. A. Clark School and Fort McMurray Composite High School cleared the walks and driveways of seniors in the downtown core. Since then, the program has expanded to include the entire urban service area of Fort McMurray, and includes all school districts. Families, businesses and adults are also encouraged to volunteer.

Apply to become a Snow Angel or submit a service request at rmwb.ca/snowangels.
