RMWB closes backcountry access as a precaution

(Fort McMurray, AB – August 3, 2017) – Crews are mobilizing to close access to the Richardson backcountry via the Fort Chipewyan winter road as wildfires burn in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.

“While there’s no public safety issue at this time, we’re closing the portion of the winter road that leads to the backcountry as a precaution,” said Deputy Chief of Operations and Technical Services Brad Grainger. “Our provincial counterparts continue to fight wildfires in the area and this proactive closure gives provincial wildfire crews more room to work. There haven’t been any requests for assistance, but we’re standing by and will help as needed.”

Residents are advised to monitor wildfire status at http://wildfire.alberta.ca/wildfire-status/status-map.aspx.

Access to the Six Lakes Recreational area, also called the Richardson backcountry, is not permitted.
