Reminder: construction safety a priority during back-to-school season

(Fort McMurray, AB – August 31, 2017) – During back-to-school season, the Municipality is reminding residents and contractors alike that construction safety for students must be a top priority. This is especially important for people living in rebuild areas including Abasand, Beacon Hill, Parsons Creek, Saprae Creek, Stone Creek, Timberlea North, Waterways and Wood Buffalo.

The speed limit in all rebuild areas and school zones is 30 km/hr. All residents and contractors are reminded to obey posted speed limits at all times and are asked to avoid driving in school zones within rebuild areas between 8 and 9 a.m. and between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. to help reduce traffic volumes.

Find more information and additional resources, including classroom activities, an activity book and a conversation guide, at rmwb.ca/constructionsafety.

Parents

Talk to your children about the hazards that exist in construction areas and ways to be aware, be seen and be safe on the way to and from school.

To get the conversation started, watch the video at rmwb.ca/constructionsafety. This video was developed in April 2017 in partnership with community stakeholders. The video provides age-appropriate safety information to ensure children are aware of the risks that exist near construction areas and understand how to avoid those risks.

Contractors

Contractors are reminded they have an important role to play in promoting safety for everyone, including children. This includes displaying civic addressing, maintaining clean and secure work sites and making sure the sidewalks near your site are clear of equipment, material and debris.
