Residents Invited to Eighth-Annual Fire Prevention Week Community Kickoff

(Fort McMurray, AB – October 5, 2016) – Regional Emergency Services (RES) is hosting the eighth-annual Fire Prevention Week Community Kickoff event on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MacDonald Island Park. The event focuses on education about all aspects of fire prevention, including household, workplace and wildfire.

“We recognize Fire Prevention Week each year, and now more than ever, our community is aware of the devastating impacts fires can have,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “I encourage everyone to learn about how to play a role in fire prevention, by testing your fire alarms regularly or developing your own home escape plan.”

The community event welcomes residents to learn about fire prevention and meet local and industrial fire departments. Residents are encouraged to tour the interactive fire safety trailer, get up close and personal with various firefighting equipment and trucks, and learn about how you can help prevent fires. The event is free and offers an array of activities for the whole family, such as a visit by Sparky the fire safety mascot and his friends, raffle prizes and a free barbecue.

Fire Prevention Week is recognized from Oct. 9 to 15 with the theme of general fire safety, which includes home escape plans, smoke alarm testing, and fire safety at home, work and play. Residents are reminded to install and maintain working smoke alarms in their homes:

•    Test smoke alarms at least one a month.
•    Replace the batteries in your systems at least once a year.
•    Replace your smoke alarms once every 10 years.
•    Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home and outside of all sleeping areas.
•    Be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions when installing a smoke alarm.
•    Develop and practice a home escape plan.
