Residents encouraged to seek mental health supports as wildfires continue in British Columbia

(Fort McMurray, AB – July 12, 2017) – Current active wildfires in British Columbia may cause residents in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) to relive painful memories from the May 2016 Horse River Wildfire and the evacuation of the region. Residents are reminded this is a natural response in recovery from trauma and they are encouraged to seek support.

There are many mental health resources available within the RMWB and across Alberta, including counselling and support services dedicated specifically to children, youth, adults, First Nations, students, teachers and families.

More information about how to access those services is available at rmwb.ca/support.

Residents wishing to support those affected by the wildfires in British Columbia are encouraged to donate to the Canadian Red Cross.

Any further questions about mental health resources in the community can be directed to the PULSE Line at 780-743-7000 or online at rmwb.ca/PULSE.
