Residents invited to the Council Commendation Wildfire Medal Ceremony: July 1

(Fort McMurray, AB – June 26, 2017) – Residents from across the region are invited to the Council Commendation Wildfire Medal Ceremony at Shell Place on July 1 at 1:30 p.m. 

“So many incredible residents stepped up and helped out in the first 100 hours of the wildfire,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “As a Council, we wanted to recognize and thank these extraordinary residents for their remarkable efforts.”

Families, friends and residents are invited to the medal ceremony on July 1. Come out and support those who participated in the first 100 hours of the 2016 Horse River Wildfire.

As a means of honouring the numerous people and groups, three categories have been developed for the recognition program:
Firefighter Award for Service
Law Enforcement Award for Service
Achievement for Public Service

General Public Seating
Spectators will be seated in an area separate from medal recipients. Be sure to arrive a little early as seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parking
Please note that parking is limited on July 1. Many activities are happening on MacDonald Island for Canada Day. Please consider road closure information relating to the Canada Day Parade at rmwb.ca/canadaday.

Transit – Fort McMurray
Only transit routes 11, 15, 16 and 99 will be in operation on July 1. These routes will be operating on Sunday/holiday schedules, with extended and additional service through the evening. Find information relating to public transit routes at rmwb.ca/transit.

Transit – Rural communities
Free transit service is available from the rural communities on July 1 to take residents to Shell Place for the ceremony. This service is available to residents in Anzac, Conklin, Fort McKay, Gregoire Lake Estates and Janvier.

Rural residents are required to register for this free service by calling Pulse at 780-743-7000.
Deadline for registration: Thursday, June 29 at 8:30 a.m.

Weather and dress
This ceremony is a formal event. It is recommended that you wear something to suit the occasion and the weather. This event will proceed rain or shine.

Photo opportunities – 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Stay after the ceremony to take photos inside the SMS Equipment Stadium at field level under the canopy. Open from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. All nominees, family members, guests and general public spectators are welcome.
