Volunteers Needed for Point in Time Homeless Count

(Fort McMurray, AB – October 11, 2016) – The municipality is seeking volunteers to help with the Point in Time homeless count taking place on Wednesday Oct. 19, 2016 from 7 – 11 p.m.

“The Point in Time homeless count happens every two years and provides a snapshot of the number of individuals without permanent housing on a particular day,” said Casandra Baillargeon, Program Coordinator, Community Services. “The data we collect allows us to examine how the homeless population changes over time, evaluate program success and track progress made on Wood Buffalo’s 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness”.

Point in Time volunteers will walk in pairs on a particular route and survey individuals at locations along the route. Volunteers will be provided with route maps and survey sheets to record basic demographic information.

In the 2014 Point in Time count, 294 individuals identified themselves as being without permanent residence. This represented a 10 percent decrease in the Municipality’s homeless population since the previous count in 2012. The Municipality has been conducting homelessness surveys since 2006.
