Winter Roads Update – Fort Chipewyan and La Loche

(Fort McMurray, AB – January 13, 2017) – The La Loche Winter Trail opens today. Initially the road will be open to light traffic 18,000 kg and lower only.

Also today, the load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road has been raised to 27,500 kg.

The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road has been cleared of any trees that had fallen due to harsh weather conditions. Motorists are reminded, however, that tree clearing operations are taking place from kilometre 0 to kilometre 31, and from kilometre 84 to kilometre 145 until mid-February 2017. Motorists are advised to take caution in these areas.

Please obey all posted signage and use caution when passing graders and water trucks working in these areas – maximum 30 km/h is advised. Motorists are also encouraged to test their brakes after travelling through freshly flooded crossings.

Please drive with caution. There are no regular services such as road patrol or cell phone coverage. Motorists must be prepared for emergency situations.

Updates will be provided regularly as required. Check the following sources for the latest information:
