Winter Roads Update – Fort Chipewyan and La Loche

(Fort McMurray, AB – January 27, 2017) – The load limit on the La Loche Winter Trail has been reduced to 10,000 kg effective today.

The load limit has been reduced due to the recent higher temperatures and the expected warm weather over the coming days. This safety precaution has been taken to maintain the integrity of the trail during warmer temperatures. Motorists are advised to take caution as icy conditions are anticipated.

The load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road remains the same at 27,500 kg.

The load limit of both Fort Chipewyan and La Loche Winter Roads will be monitored over the coming days and updates will be provided as available based on weather conditions.

Motorists are reminded of tree clearing operations taking place along the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road from kilometre 0 to kilometre 31, and from kilometre 84 to kilometre 145 until mid-February 2017. Motorists should take caution in these areas.

Please obey all posted signage and use caution when passing graders and water trucks on the road – maximum 30 km/h is advised. Motorists are also encouraged to test their brakes after travelling through freshly flooded crossings.

High clearance 4x4 vehicles are recommended. The delta area has rough sections so reduce speed and drive to conditions.

There are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage, so always be prepared for emergencies.

Updates will be provided regularly as required. Check the following sources for the latest information:
