RMWB Wildfire Recovery Information

As of 2:30 p.m. MT, a fire was heading north to Tower Road. At the present time, it is moving 30-40 metres per minute and is 6 kilometres from Tower Road. We anticipate the fire will hit Tower Road in two hours (as of 3:45 p.m.).

This alert affects a number of plants. It includes the camps off of AOSTRA Road, including:

  • Noralta
  • Poplar Creek (Birch)
  • Poplar Creek Lodge
  • Blacksands
  • Baseline
  • Mackay River
  • Brion Dover
  • Brion Ops Corp Camp
  • Brion Construction Camp B
  • STP Mackay Lodge
  • Brion Dover South Base (Thickwood)
  • South Pacific Resources

About 4,000 workers are currently being evacuated from these areas.

At this time, we are stopping all traffic coming northbound into town. Highway 63 northbound is closed and Highway 881 also remains closed. Highway 63 southbound remains open.

Fort McKay is not evacuating at this point, nor are personnel in the Regional Emergency Operations Centre, Water Treatment Plant and Fort McMurray Urgent Care Centre.

This controlled, precautionary evacuation is an example why it is not safe to be in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo at this time.
