The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has released another recovery progress report.

Officials were pleased to welcome 439 homes back into Abasand and Beacon Hill as part of Phase 1 Green Zone re-entry. Residents were able to return home starting at 8 a.m. on August 31, 2016, with Information Centres checking in a total of 237 residents. Over 1,000 contractors have completed the mandatory safety orientation for demolition work in Abasand and Beacon Hill.

On Tuesday, August 30, Council voted unanimously to pass a motion cancelling a portion of property taxes to residents affected by the wildfire. Residents will see a portion of their taxes cancelled for the time that they were evacuated. Abasand, Beacon Hill and Waterways residents seeing a larger cancellation which matches the extended period that they were kept out of their homes. Residents whose homes were rendered uninhabitable and irreparably damaged by the wildfire will see an additional cancellation of municipal property tax related to the destruction of their structure.

Today, the Government of Alberta announced its plan for interim housing for displaced residents in Wood Buffalo. A demonstration model will be set up on September 9 at the Youth Assessment Centre at 180 Mackenzie Boulevard, where residents can apply to the Government of Alberta for the units.
