Fire Ban in Place Across the Municipality: Learn More

Permit Fee Exemptions

As of Nov. 7, 2016, all permits issued related to rebuilding a structure or property damaged as a result of the wildfire, will be exempted from paying permitting fees.

Permitting fees that have already been paid, will be refunded. Home owners are responsible to apply for a refund. To obtain a request home, visit online or contact the Municipality's Planning & Development Department via email at permit.inquiries@rmwb.ca.

Requirements

To be exempt from permitting fees, the affected property must be on the exemption list developed by the Municipality. The list identifies all structures that were considered a total loss. If your home sustained damages as a result of the wildfire, verification will be required upon applying for permits or requesting a refund.

Many structures sustained damages as a result of the wildfire and permits are required to make repairs. These properties will be exempted from the permitting fees as well.

Proof of damages (e.g., document from the insurance company and pictures of the damages) will be required so the applicant can be added to the exemption list.

Furthermore, if there is a change in ownership, municipal staff will preview the Certificate of Title to verify the applicant is the new registered owner.

Any fines or penalties that may be assessed as a result of starting work without permits or non-compliance with permit conditions, regulations or bylaws, will be required to be paid by the permit applicant, as these fees will not be exempt.

The permit applicant – the contractor in most cases – will be responsible for these fees and they should not be charged back to the owner.

Rebuild Quotes

Now that permit fees are exempt, residents who are rebuilding should verify with their contractors that permit fees are not being charged and they have been excluded in the rebuild quote.

Permitting fees that have already been paid, will be refunded. Home owners are responsible to apply for a refund. To obtain a request home, visit online or contact the Municipality's Planning & Development Department via email at permit.inquiries@rmwb.ca.

Timeline

Refunds are expected to take between 30 - 45 days, depending on the volume of requests the Planning and Development Department receives.
