Playground Replacement and Repairs

Following the May, 2016 Horse River Wildfire, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo determined 12 of its playgrounds were damaged or destroyed by the wildfire. Work is continuing to replace or repair all of the damaged playgrounds.

All work is expected to be complete before the end of October, 2017.

Repairs have already been completed at the Ecole Boreal Playground in Abasand and at the Belgian Green Playground in Prairie Creek.

Additional replacements and repairs will take place in the following areas:

Abasand

  • Simon and Lucas Park and Playground
  • Athabasca Avenue Playground, Della's Park
  • Athabasca Crescent Park and Playground
Beacon Hill

  • Beacon Hill School Playground
  • Good Shepherd School Playground and Tot Lot

Waterways

  • Howard Pew Playground
  • Justin Allen Playground

North Side

  • Warren Way Playground, Wood Buffalo
  • Prospect Point Playground, Stone Creek
  • Killdeer Way Playground, Eagle Ridge

While every effort is being made to replace the playgrounds to a condition that is similar to what was lost, the replacements and repairs will provide significant upgrades to some of the play structures, which are in keeping with current best practices and standards. All of the playgrounds will also be accessible for all play abilities.

The costs of the replacements and repairs are covered through the Municipality's insurance. There are no additional costs to the Municipality.

Residents are reminded that all affected playgrounds remain closed until replacements and repairs are complete. Fencing will be installed and signage will be in place. All residents are encouraged to stay out of these areas for their own safety.

Any questions about playground replacements and repairs should be directed to the PULSE Line either by phone at 780-743-7000 or online at rmwb.ca/pulse.
