Holiday service schedule: WMZs, Transit, waste collection

(Fort McMurray, AB – December 19, 2018) – Due to the statutory holidays, Municipal offices are closed on Dec. 25, 26 and Jan 1. Even though municipal offices will be closed, all essential and emergency services will continue regular operations. In addition, residents can contact Pulse, or visit the municipal website for information.

Please note the following important holiday service schedules and information:

Winter Maintenance Zones:
WMZ’s will be relaxed from Dec. 24 – Jan. 1, meaning that on-street parking is permitted along residential streets during this time. Please observe any other posted signage in the area. WMZ’s will come back into effect on Jan. 2, 2019. 

Christmas Tree Drop Off:
A number of Christmas tree recycling sites will be set up throughout Fort McMurray. Please ensure the tree stand and all decorations are removed before bringing it to any of the marked drop off sites.

The following drop off locations will be open from Dec. 21 until Jan. 15 in the parking lots:
Frank LaCroix Arena – Beacon Hill
Heritage Drive skate park – Parsons North
Howard Pew Park - Waterways
Sobey’s – Thickwood
Syncrude Athletic Park – Timberlea
Michelle’s Your Independent Grocer – Timberlea (from Dec. 27, one bin will be located at the side of the building)

Curbside Garbage and Recycling Collection:
Curbside garbage and recycling collection will not take place on December 25 and January 1.

Residents who normally receive curbside garbage and recycling collection on Tuesday, Dec. 25 will receive this service on Saturday, Dec. 29. Residents who normally receive curbside collection on Tuesday, Jan. 1 will receive this service on Saturday, Jan. 5. All other residents will receive curbside collection on their regular service dates.

 Residents can find the special holiday curbside garbage and recycling collection calendar at rmwb.ca/garbage.

Fort McMurray Landfill: 
The landfill will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, and open regular hours throughout the rest of the holiday season. Regular hours of operation are 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Janvier and Conklin Transfer Stations:
The Janvier Transfer Station will be closed on Dec. 25, and will reopen for regular service on Dec. 27. It will also be closed on Jan. 1, and will reopen for regular service on Jan. 3.

The Conklin Transfer Station will be closed on Dec. 26, and will reopen on Dec. 28. 

Soil Stockpile:
Please be advised that the soil stockpile at the rear southwest corner of Abrams Land will be closed from Dec. 22 and will reopen on Jan. 2.

Outdoor Public Skating Rinks:
Residents are reminded that there are a number of outdoor public skating rinks throughout Fort McMurray. Find out which rinks are opened this holiday season by visiting rmwb.ca/outdoors.   

Transit Service: 
Dec. 24 – Regular transit service
Dec. 25 – Only Routes 11 (Airport), 15 (Timberlea), and 16 (Thickwood) will be running on the statutory holiday schedule
Dec. 26 – Only Routes 11 (Airport),15 (Timberlea),16 (Thickwood),18 (TaigaNova) and, 99 (MacDonald Island) will be running on the statutory holiday schedule
Dec. 31 – Regular service with extended service on Routes 11 (Airport), 15 (Timberlea), and 16 (Thickwood).
Jan. 1 –  Only Routes 11 (Airport),15 (Timberlea),16 (Thickwood),18 (TaigaNova) and, 99 (MacDonald Island) will be running on the statutory holiday schedule

There are no impacts to rural transit service. Rural transit service will run on Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1 as scheduled. For service schedules, maps and information, visit rmwb.ca/transit.  

FOG (Fat, Oil and Grease):
Residents are reminded to contain it, don’t drain it this holiday season. Fat, oil and grease (also known as FOG) can be a costly plumbing issue, but is easily avoided with some simple habits. Visit rmwb.ca/fog for more information on how you can manage FOG and protect your home or business.
