Municipality to lift some mandatory evacuations on May 1 at 2 p.m.

(Fort McMurray, AB – May 1, 2020) – Water levels receded significantly in the lower townsite and the Regional Emergency Coordination Centre will be lifting the mandatory evacuation order for some affected areas at 2 p.m. on May 1, 2020.

Mandatory evacuation orders will be lifted for the following areas:

  • MacDonald Island
  • All downtown streets northwest Riedel Street
  • All downtown streets northwest King Street between Highway 63 and Franklin Avenue

Residents and business owners in these areas are permitted to access their properties without restriction but should exercise caution as structures in these areas may have experienced internal damage.

Utilities (gas, electricity and water) have not been restored in full at this time.

Residents must not attempt to enter the area prior to 2 p.m. and access controls will remain in place until that time. Staging on Highway 63 is also not permitted.

Mandatory evacuation orders will remain in effect for the following areas:

  • Riedel Street southeast to Clearwater Drive
  • Franklin Avenue southeast to Clearwater Drive
  • King Street southeast to Clearwater Drive
  • Draper
  • Waterways
  • Longboat Landing

Re-entry in these areas is not permitted at this time due to continued flooding and safety hazards.
