Safety codes permits mandatory for flood rebuilds; permits are free and expedited

(Fort McMurray, AB – May 21, 2020) – Homeowners rebuilding from the flood must ensure that their contractors have the appropriate permits in place before rebuilding begins.

Permitting and other fees in support of flood recovery work have been waived by Council. Permits are being issued within one or two business days depending on the permit.

Contractors who begin rebuilding without appropriate permits can be fined by Safety Codes Officers.

“Safety and supporting our residents are always a top priority and it is even more of a focus presently with the community in flood recovery and with the realities of COVID-19,” said Jamie Doyle, Chief Administrative Officer. “It is essential that all contractors – including those based locally – apply for, and obtain permits, while working with us to ensure community members can safely remediate, restore and rebuild. Our region is known for its safety culture and taking care of each other. We have full expectation that the permitting process will be followed because our residents deserve for safety to be put first.”

The Municipality will be actively enforcing the Safety Codes Permitting Bylaw (Bylaw No. 17/023) to ensure that all flood-related restoration work is completed safely. Any violation of the Safety Codes Bylaw can be subject to a Municipal Tag (($500) or a Violation Ticket ($1,000+) and a mandatory court appearance)) along with a $100-per-day fine for ongoing non-compliance.

Property owners are responsible for all necessary permits, which ensures that the work done on the building, electrical, gas and plumbing systems is completed to a safe standard. Building permits are being issued within two business days while electrical, plumbing, gas and gas appliance permits are being issued on the same day.

Property owners should request copies of permits from their contractors. If your contractor refuses to provide you with a copy, or if you have any questions about which permits are required for your property, please call Pulse at 780-743-7000 and ask to speak with a Safety Codes Officer.
