Winter roads update – load limits reduced during daytime hours

(Fort McMurray, AB – March 11, 2019) – Starting at noon today, load limits will be reduced to 5,000 kg and lower during daytime hours from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

With warmer weather, load limits will be reduced to 5,000 kg and lower during daytime hours to protect the road, so it stay open later into the season.

This means that vehicles heavier than 5,000 kg cannot use the Fort Chipewyan or La Loche winter roads during daytime hours of 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Residents and industry are encouraged to make any trips or transport heavier loads as soon as practical. Timelines for the road closure cannot be predicted as they are dependent on weather conditions.

As temperatures rise, ice melt along the road can create very slippery conditions. Please drive with caution and stay to the right-hand side of the road to give oncoming traffic plenty of room. Motorists are also reminded to observe all posted signage for enhanced safety and to help protect the integrity of the winter road.
