Stockpiling Site for Soil From Wildfire-damaged Properties Opens Saturday Morning

(Fort McMurray, AB – May 19, 2017) – Excavated soil from wildfire-damaged properties in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will be stockpiled in Abrams Land starting on Saturday, May 20, at 8 a.m.

The stockpiling site is located at the rear southwest corner of Abrams Land and can be accessed on the west side of Thickwood Boulevard across from Dickins Drive. Contractors hauling soil will be asked to sign a declaration form on site to confirm that the soil comes from a wildfire-damaged area.

Stockpiling the soil will significantly reduce the quantity of rebuild-related material entering the Regional Landfill as it can be repurposed in the future.

Soil from areas other than wildfire-damaged properties must be taken to the Regional Landfill, where it will be subject to the disposal guidelines set out in the Utility Rates Bylaw No. 10/001.

Fees paid at the landfill to date for acceptable contaminated soil from wildfire-damaged properties will be refunded. The refund application form is available at rmwb.ca/soilfeewaiver.

The current waiver of fees for the disposal of wildfire-related acceptable contaminated soil at the Regional Landfill will be reconsidered by Council once the stockpile site is fully operational.

Questions about soil stockpiling can be directed to recovery@rmwb.ca or to the PULSE Line at 780-743-7000.
