This summer, the Municipality contracted professional research firm, Banister Research, to conduct the region’s first citizen satisfaction survey since 2009.

Between June 26 and July 18, a total of 800 phone surveys were conducted; 733 were completed by residents of Fort McMurray and 67 were completed by residents of the rural hamlets. A separate web-based survey was also available and collected 256 completed surveys.

A random telephone survey of residents provides a margin of error no greater than +/- 3.4% at the 95% confidence level, or 19 times out of 20, meaning that the data reported will be within 3.4% of the real population 19 times out of 20.

Results are considered representative due to the random-digit dialing methodology: phone numbers are randomly selected from a frame of all valid telephone numbers in the region, thereby giving households within the municipal boundaries equal opportunity of being contacted. To ensure representation from younger demographics, a portion of the respondents are reached via cellphone.

The 2018 Citizen Satisfaction Survey assessed resident awareness and satisfaction around:

  • Quality of life and safety
  • Municipal services, programs and facilities
  • Contact with municipal staff
  • Value received for tax dollars
  • Municipal priorities
  • Communication with the public

The results of the survey will be used to help the Municipality identify successes, as well as opportunities for improvement to services, programs and facilities throughout the region.
