Culture Days

Culture Days is a nationally celebrated annual event that occurs on the last weekend of September. Each year dedicated community members, artisans, non-profits and other cultural industries work together to organize a weekend filled with free family-friendly arts, heritage, music, literary and multi-cultural events.

Banff Mountain Film Festival

For nearly four decades, the prestigious Banff Mountain Film Festival has showcased a selection of adventure and environmental films from around the world during a nine day Festival that takes place in Banff, Alberta. Immediately after the Festival ends in November each year, a selection of their best films goes on tour across Canada and to over 40 other countries. Bringing audiences up close and personal to adrenaline-packed action sports, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is an exhilarating exploration of the mountain world.

Canada Day

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo hosts the Canada Day Parade every July 1. This annual event kicks off the Canada Day celebrations in our community. ONERec takes care of all the exciting family and community activities.

Chinese New Year Celebration

The Fort McMurray Chinese-Canadian Cultural Society (CCCS) organizes the annual Chinese New Year Celebration Banquet. It is a traditional Chinese cultural celebration of the lunar New Year with a Chinese cuisine buffet, traditional Chinese dancing, door prizes and a social dance. The Chinese Society has been serving the Chinese community and those interested in Chinese language and culture for over 35 years.

CIBC Run for the Cure

Since 1992 the annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure has been the largest, single-day, volunteer-led national event in support of creating a future without breast cancer. Everyone is welcome to run, walk, sprint or stroll 1k or 5 k during this fundraiser.

Family Fun Day

MacDonald Island Park (operated by the not-for-profit Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo) is Canada’s largest community recreational, leisure, and social centre and works under the umbrella of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The Centre has evolved as one of the foremost venues for major events and exhibitions in the region.

Festival of Trees

Each year during the third weekend of November, the Health Foundation hosts its annual Festival of Trees. Presented by Syncrude Canada, the Festival celebrates the magic of the holiday season. The three-day Festival includes an Ugly Sweater Party, a Skating Party and a Meet Me Under the Mistletoe Gala.

Fort McMurray Urban Market

The Fort McMurray Urban Market is an outdoor market that is host to a variety of vendors selling fresh fruits and veggies, locally prepared food, hand-made crafts and much more. It brings a variety of local and regional vendors to the downtown of Fort McMurray with markets running on a bi-weekly schedule from June to October.Over 80% of these vendors make, bake or grow their products in Alberta.

Beyond the vendors, the market includes community groups, musicians, artists and special guests which create a fun and family friendly atmosphere. This is a must see local event!

IgNIGHT

IgNIGHT is a free, temporary public art exhibition that happens throughout Fort McMurray’s downtown core each fall. This initiative features works by two internationally renowned artists along with surprise performances. The installations can be enjoyed on the IgNIGHT bus tour.

June Bug Children’s Festival

The Hub Family Resource Centre is a non-profit charitable organization, offering free programming and resources to families within the RMWB. Services at The Hub are targeted towards children newborn to six years old and their families.

Métis Festival

Métis Festival day provides a fun and exciting atmosphere where Métis cultural and historical knowledge will be shared by members of McMurray Métis (MNA Local 1935) with residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Visitors will hear fiddling, watch the fast steps of jigging and partake in fabulous Métis cuisine. There will be games for children and traditional Métis entertainment.

Multicultural Expo

Travel the world in one day and on one ticket! The Multicultural Expo lets you explore over 24 cultures (from China to India to Thailand) in your own Municipality. Handicrafts and food are available for purchase and you will be able to share in an array of cuisine, dances, games, languages and art. Face painting, glitter tattoos and henna art will all be offered at the event.

National Aboriginal Day

Gatherings will take place across the nation on June 21 in celebration of National Aboriginal Day. Hosted by the Fort McMurray Heritage Society, with the support of First Nation & Métis Nation Relations, National Aboriginal Day provides the opportunity for residents to explore traditional dancing, drumming and food. The free event is coordinated with a month long exhibit at My McMurray experience. The Total Aboriginal Interpretive Trail will also be opening on June 21 at MacDonald Island Park, paying homage to the spirit of the north with seven public art installations.

Relay for Life: Fort McMurray

The Relay for Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour overnight fundraising event by the Canadian Cancer Society that brings the community together to celebrate life and fight cancer. Teams of 10-15 people fundraise individually and as a team to raise money and participants commit to raising at least $100 each. Teams take turns walking/running laps all night and they stay overnight in the decorated tent city, united by food, music and entertainment.

Santa Claus Parade

The annual Santa Claus Parade offers fun for the entire family and lights up the night in Fort McMurray with over 50 floats and community groups decked out in holiday finery. Millions of lights bring the downtown alive with the Lights of Christmas and thousands come out to celebrate Wood Buffalo’s Big Spirit.

Ukrainian New Year’s Celebration (“Malanka”)

The Ukrainian Cultural Society and Avrora Dancers hold their annual Malanka New Year dinner and dance in January. Dinner includes homemade perogies, cabbage rolls and other Ukrainian favourites. Guests enjoy the lively and colourful dancing of the young Ukrainian dancers. “Malanka” symbolizes new beginnings.

WinterPLAY

WinterPLAY is a celebration of winter through arts, culture, recreation and sport. A popular annual event, it includes the Shootout on the Snye four-on-four pond hockey tournament as well as community talent and community partner activities. There is outdoor fun at Snye Park throughout the festival weekend along with a variety of partner activities throughout the community. The weekend closes out with a fantastic fireworks show!

YMM ArtFest

The YMM ArtFest is a four day event celebrating visual art in the community. Presented by the Wood Buffalo Artists Forum (WBAF), the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, Gallery at Frames & More and the Fort McMurray Historical Society, the event offers free art exhibitions, art workshops, artists’ demonstrations and entertainment. The Artfest will not be running in 2015 because of the Summer Games.
