The Western Canada Summer Games' road cycling events will affect traffic and parking in parts of Timberlea and Thickwood Saturday, Aug. 8, and Sunday, Aug. 9.

From 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday and from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, Thickwood Blvd, Timberline Drive, Confederation Way, Woodland Drive and Tamarack Way will have limited access.

Two outside lanes on Thickwood Blvd. and Confederation Way will be closed for the race as they will be reserved for cyclists. During this time motorists will only be able to travel counter-clockwise from Timberlea to Thickwood.

Access to Timberlea will remain unchanged; you must go through Timberlea to access Thickwood. Access to Highway 63 from Thickwood will remain unchanged, while Timberlea residents must travel through Thickwood for this access.

In addition, traffic on Timberline Drive, Woodland Drive and Tamarack Way will be reduced to a single lane. Access in these areas will be directed by uniformed officers. Residents are also reminded that there will be no on-street parking along these secondary roads from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, until Sunday, Aug 9, at 5 p.m.

Here are some answers to likely questions about the impact of the bicycle road races in Thickwood and Timberlea.

Will the roads be blocked off while cyclists practice on Friday?

No, the roads will not be blocked on Friday, however, cyclists will be practicing on Confederation Drive and Thickwood Boulevard. Please watch for cyclists and remember that cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists.

When will the roads be closed for the road race?

Thickwood Boulevard, Timberline Drive, Confederation Way, Woodland Drive and Tamarack Way will have limited access on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 9 from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., for the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games Cycling Road Race. Please note: roads will progressively close staring at 6:30 a.m.

Will I be able to come and go during the race?

Yes. During the race, motorists will only be able to travel counter-clockwise from Timberlea to Thickwood. Pedestrians and motorists will have access to major intersections. Road race cyclists will have the right of way. Please make sure they pass before proceeding across intersections.

Access to Timberlea from Highway 63 will only be available through Confederation Way; you must go through Timberlea to access Thickwood. Access to Highway 63 will only be available through Thickwood Boulevard.

In addition, traffic on Timberline Drive, Woodland Drive and Tamarack Way will be reduced to a single lane. Access in these areas will be directed by course marshals. Motorists will be traveling in a clockwise direction on these streets.

Will there be on-street parking?

Residents are reminded that there will be no on-street parking along Timberline Drive, Woodland Drive and Tamarack Way from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 until Sunday, Aug 9 at 5 p.m. No-parking signs will be put in place a minimum of 48 hours prior.

What happens if my car gets towed?

Vehicles left on Timberline Drive, Woodland Drive and Tamarack Way will be courtesy towed to St. Paul Elementary School and Save On Foods grocery store at no cost to the owner. If your vehicle has been relocated, you’re encouraged to call 780-791-9444.
