Getting Help in Wood Buffalo

Liway Cuadra

Liway Cuadra, originally from the Philipines, left Hong Kong to move to Canada in 2008. The live-in caregiver decided to move here when her friend, who was living in Fort McMurray, suggested she come.
Liway has been with the same employer since she arrived and has forged a relationship with a family that she describes as “wonderful.”

Even though Liway, whose background is in education, will soon get a working visa, she doesn’t want to leave her caregiver job. “My contract is being renewed for another two years and it would break my heart to leave the kids.”

She has settled nicely into life in Fort McMurray and is an active volunteer with Foreign WINGSE Resource Centre where she helps other newcomers adjust to life in Canada. “I love it here. It is such a giving community.”

Whether you're new to the region or you've been here since birth, at times we all need to access resources that help make our lives better and easier. Support services, health care facilities, family and community resources, seniors support and a variety of cultural and religious organizations help individuals and families enjoy a great quality of life.
