English as a Second Language (ESL)
The language spoken in most workplaces in Wood Buffalo is English. There are many programs in Wood Buffalo and across Alberta for people who want to learn English. Some services are free, while some have to be paid for by the student. Spaces in free or funded programs are limited, and there is often a waiting list. Investing in English language training is important for those who want to work in the region, and for adapting well in the community.
- The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program is hosted by Keyano College. LINC provides funded language instruction to adult newcomers who want to learn or improve their English language skills as they settle in Canada. Permanent residents and Convention Refugees, 18 years and older, are eligible for this program.
- Keyano College also offers an English as an Additional Language program.
- Wood Buffalo Regional Library hosts an ESL Conversation Group, which is free for newcomers to Canada to practice their English.
- YMCA Immigrant Settlement Services offers programs that allow newcomers to practice their English language skills.
