Yard Waste Collection

2018 Yard Waste Curbside Collection Begins May 28

Curbside yard waste collection begins May 28, 2018, and will run until the autumn when snow begins to fall.

Christmas Tree Drop Off - January 2018

Recycling your Christmas tree is easy. A number of sites will be set up throughout Fort McMurray to drop off your tree once the holidays are over. Please ensure that you remove the stand and all decorations before bringing it to any of the marked drop off sites, which will be open from Christmas day until Jan. 15, 2018 in the parking lots at the following locations:

  • Frank LaCroix Arena (Beacon Hill)
  • Haxton Centre/Borealis Park (Downtown)
  • Sobey’s (Thickwood)
  • Syncrude Athletic Park (Timberlea)
  • Michelle’s Your Independent Grocer (Timberlea

The public drop off area at the landfill is able to receive yard waste at no charge year-round, seven days a week from 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Curbside collection of yard waste will begin the week of May 28, 2018. Residents are asked to put yard waste into brown paper yard waste bags. When placing bags out for curbside collection, please put your bags at the curb next to your bins and not in the bins. Plastic and compostable plastic bags are not accepted.

The following can go in your brown paper yard waste bags:

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Flowers
  • Weeds
  • Culled plants
  • Small twigs less than 30 centimetres (12 inches) long

Tips for disposing of yard waste:

  • Brown paper yard waste bags are required. The RMWB cannot process plastic or compostable bags as part of yard waste.
  • Do not put kitchen food scraps, pet waste or non-organic garden waste such as broken plant pots in the bag.
  • Each household is limited to four bags of yard waste per week. (If extra bags are put out, the Municipality will issue a notification advising of the issue, and the extra bags will not be picked up.)
  • Yard waste bags must weigh under 16 kilograms (35 pounds)
  • Bags must be put out to the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.
