State of Local Emergency

A state of local emergency for COVID-19 is no longer in effect for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. At this time, a state of provincial emergency is still in effect for the Province of Alberta.

Past State of Local Emergency:

On March 20, Mayor Don Scott declared a state of local emergency for the Wood Buffalo region. This announcement can be viewed here

While in effect, the state of local emergency gave the Municipality access to additional resources and special powers through the Emergency Management Act.  Under the state of local emergency the Municipality had the ability to:

  • Control or prohibit travel to or from any area of the Municipality
  • Procure or fix prices for food, medical supplies, equipment or other essential supplies
  • Use any property, services, resources or equipment within the Municipality for the duration of the state of emergency
  • Authorize or require any qualified person to provide aid
  • Issue a mandatory evacuation notice
