A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to reduce the impact of flooding in the communities within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Individuals, whether at home or work, play an important role. There are a number of important steps you can take to prepare your family, safeguard your property and protect personal items that cannot be replaced.

This pamphlet was created to help answer questions and, more importantly, to provide information about what you need to do to protect yourself against future flood threats.

Flood Preparedness Pamphlet

While floods cannot be predicted, there is a potential of flooding in the lower town site in any year. In order to gain advanced knowledge and thus allow residents of this area some warning of river break-up, Alberta Environment and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Emergency Management monitor the Athabasca River upper basin, local river levels, precipitation, and overall weather patterns. When break-up is imminent local monitoring activity is increased. You may call the 24 hour Pulse line at (780) 743-7000. You can greatly reduce your risk of damage or loss if you take the precautions outlined in the brochure.
