Restaurant Fire Suppression Systems

The National Fire Code Alberta Edition requires that restaurant fire suppression systems are in conformance with NFPA 96, The Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations.


Only qualified persons shall test or perform maintenance on a restaurant fire suppression system when they have acquired an approved certificate of training from either:
  • a public post-secondary educational institution
  • they have acquired a certificate of training from a manufacturer.

Working in the RMWB

A valid permit is required before any work is done on a restaurant fire suppression system. Businesses must complete the Fire Suppression Permit  package and submit it to the Fire Prevention Branch for review and processing.


Records of audits, plans, tests, inspections, maintenance and operational procedures shall be made, and a copy shall be retained at the premises for two years.
