We’re building a water main from the water treatment plant to Abasand. The work is necessary to meet the changing demands of the water supply system.

Information Session: Nov. 21, 2016

Residents are invited to an information session about the southwest supply line being built in Abasand. The following topics will be covered:

  • Change of timelines due to the wildfire (project to be completed by fall of 2017)
  • Safety
  • Vibration monitoring
  • Landscaping
  • Refresher on purpose of project and affected areas

The session will be held on Monday, Nov. 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre at Keyano College. Subject-matter experts will be on hand to take questions and address concerns.

Project Update: September 2016

The contractor mobilized back to the site in mid-August 2016. Since then the contractor completed auger work under Athabasca Avenue. Work underway includes steel water main installation from the horizontal directional drilling site to the Water Treatment Plant tie-in.

Trenchless Installation (Auger)

In order to minimize disruptions to residents of Alexander Crescent and users of the surrounding park and playground facilities, pipe will be installed using trenchless methods. Instead of digging trenches, an auger (a tool for boring holes) will be used. Entry points, or auger pits, will be created in the vicinity of Alexander Crescent and the cemetery to facilitate the work. These pits will be approximately 15m x 25m in size and will be excavated in areas that don’t impede driveways. All auger pits will be fenced or barricaded to ensure safety and work will abide by the municipality’s noise bylaw.
