Comprehensive Firebreak Program

The validation deadline for the Comprehensive Firebreak Program has now passed. Firebreak Property owners who have been validated may follow up with any questions by contacting wildfire.claims@rmwb.ca.

The Municipal Comprehensive Firebreak Program has been established to provide Firebreak Compensation to the owners of Firebreak Properties in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).

Firebreak Properties are defined as "real or personal property that has suffered damage as a result of proactive measures taken to demolish the property for firebreak purposes in advance of any ignition of the property."

The Comprehensive Firebreak Program applies to properties that sustained damage from bulldozing, water bombing, and fire retardant. The intent of the Program is to address the gap that may exist between an individual’s insurance policy and the cost of returning to a pre-fire state.

The Program defines Firebreak Compensation as ‘an amount of money to pay for damages not covered by insurance to allow a Firebreak Property owner to replace or repair the property to a pre-fire state of like kind and quality.’

This Program is administered by the RMWB Recovery Task Force and Insurance Services.

Once a Firebreak Property owner has been identified and validated by the Recovery Task Force, they will be contacted by Insurance Services and asked to complete the following five steps:

  1. Resident to submit a claim to their personal insurance
  2. If required, resident to submit a claim to Insurance Services for any gaps in their personal insurance coverage
  3. Insurance Services via a third party adjuster will assess claims
  4. Review of assessment by Recovery Task Force and Government of Alberta
  5. Payment made to the resident

Property owners who have not yet been identified for the Program, and believe they may qualify, are encouraged to read the full Program and send an email to wildfire.claims@rmwb.ca. Eligible Firebreak Property owners are encouraged to share information about this Program with friends and neighbours who may also qualify.

Firebreak Property owners must initiate the adjustment process with RMWB Insurance Services prior to Dec 31, 2017.

Winter Maintenance Subzones 1 & 2 are active Jan. 20 - 24.
